We discover how NOT to relocate an outside water hose spigot when adding a front porch to a house.

1st, do not hide the new one behind lattice that was chewed on by some rodent at one point:

Kinja'd!!!

Once discovering there was no water coming out, and the water was turned ON in the basement (one valve/line feeds the front and rear spigots. rear spigot spews water) I traced it to a handy removable section of porch with the original spigot location, which leads us to

2nd: Do not do.... this. ANY of this:

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, hello shielded wiring, you’re not supposed to be there quite like that...

At one time there was a small section of garden hose leading from this spigot to the one under the lattice at the end of the porch. So I started pulling up boards to see what I had to deal with to replace it...

3rd: Fuck, that’s a long pipe. I need to pull up more boards:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Aha! Found the terminus. Also found the broken end of hose still on it.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I pulled the stupid broken end off, and the splitter from the spigot on the house since I don’t need two water sources, especially since the one valved spigot was pissing water everywhere when I turned on the spigot.... I’m going to run a new hose to the spigot under the porch, but am going to try and position it further out away from the lattice so I can actually PUT A HOSE ON IT. The good news is its not firmly mounted, I can twist the whole thing, pipe and all so I might just try to push it out a bit.

Why they didn’t just extend some pipe out the whole way I’ll never know, but judging by the way they rewired everything they half-assed a LOT of stuff at each remodel/addition.

Kick your home inspector in the shin, hard.

We inspected the house on a cold snowy day, so things that were marked as “Not Able To Inspect ” were

Roof (covered in snow)

Basement walls (not enough open space visible)

Outside spigots (assumed off due to weather)

Gas Fireplace (not allowed to operate?)

Thankfully nothing egregious or dangerous has shown up yet, but we do have a smell in the basement at times like the plumbing vent stack isn’t venting properly, and twice now I’ve found water on the basement floor with no regularity.

The joys of home ownership!

It’s like this person has never been properly trained to do any sort of construction work.

Ahhh, the ol “Can’t see it, now it’s your problem” clause.

At least nothing too terribly serious to deal with, though that exposed wiring on the homes exterior gives me pause. Unsure of your local code requirements, but that probably doesn't meet em, lol.

What homeowner is?

It might have whenever it was done... the good news is, the front porch has a nice overhang so between that and being under the porch against the house it’ll stay mostly dry and intact .

Well, unless the spigot leaks.

Or a rodent gets in there and gets hungry.

and twice now I’ve found water on the basement floor with no regularity.

Based on this, I’d wonder if there’s a leaky pipe behind the walls. You said previously it wasn’t particularly rain related.

...and rodents love the taste of wire insulation, apparently.

Should be fine, though I hope for a gfci breaker on that run, all things considered.

There are no pipes where I see water. Only the BACK porch/deck. The last few times its rained I haven’t seen water, but I still am going to pull down the horrid wood panelling down there and check that wall.

Speaking of things the inspector found.... the outside outlet (which I assume this wire runs to) isn’t GFCI... but the breaker in the basement for it IS. So he gave it a pass.

Sadly the garage is also on that circuit, so I have to be careful what I run out there. I haven’t tried plugging my air compressor in yet. But the garage fridge seems to be okay.

As long as you’re not going to step off the porch and end up looking like this, it's all good :

My hope is that the wiring was just for  the switch on the porch for the overhead lights, which I can easily delete since we do not use them, and have no need for.

My old neighbor is a licensed contractor. He also taught me the basic trades, but I always consult with him.

As a first time home owner *and* it’s a 60 year old home, can confirm.

At least I know how to do electrical.
